If you know about Jamaica and its attractions, you probably already know about Dunn’s River Falls. Once you mention Jamaica, it’s one of the first attractions you will hear or see mentioned. Nevertheless, you might want to know more details on what to expect.

It is one of our many national treasures that is waiting for you to explore it.

I have visited Dunns River more times than I can count but I have never thought about knowing its history until now.

The falls that flows across more than 183 meters or 600 feet, is said to be the location of the legendary battle of “Las Chorreras” in 1657. It was between the English and the Spanish force from Cuba, for ownership of the land. The “Las Chorreras” was reduced to now what is called “Ocho Rios” which means eight rivers. What’s increasing is that there are not really eight rivers but four in the vicinity. Namely, Cave River, Roaring River, Turtle River and Dunns River. They were called “Chorreras” based on their nature of quick descent.

The English won the battle under the leadership of the British, Charles Pryce who was the first owner of “Las Chorreras”. Dunns River later became apart of the Belmont property that was attained by the Government in 1972. The property is now owned by (UDC) for the Jamaican people. The falls has been featured in the well known James Bond movie “Dr. No”.

Dunns River Falls meets the Caribbean Sea

It is one of the few rivers in the world that runs directly into the Caribbean Sea. When you enter the property, you have access to both the falls and the sea. I was very fascinated with the hot and really cold temperature of the river merging with the sea. It was quite an experience.

If you are planning a trip to Dunns River, I would suggest doing some exercise before as it is a lot of walking. If you are like me with a sedentary job, take my foolish advice. I paid for it the next day.

Dunns River Falls Hill

Dunns River Falls Hill

Dunns River falls starts from the top of a hill and runs down under the main road directly into the sea. You will have to go up the hill, off the main road to the parking lot. Once you get to the entrance, you will have to go back down a hill in order to reach the end of the falls and the beginning of the sea.

They recommend using shoes to climb the falls as some of the river stones are very slippery and sharp. I have tried it with both methods and I prefer to go without shoes as I seem to have more grip and control, but I have to be very careful and walk slowly. They have falls guides that can assist you along the way. You should note that using a guide might attract a fee. You might need to call or ask before using a guide.

Climbing the Dunns River Falls

Climbing the Dunns River Falls

The climb is quite and exercise. Consider it a hike with water pushing you in the opposite direction. It’s a great challenge. If along the way you get tired or feel like you can’t continue, you can always turn back or take the stairs along the way. If you prefer not to climb the falls, you can also follow your friends and family along the path as they climb the falls by using the stairs.

It is a huge property with lots of things to do. They even recently added a small water park for children to play.

On your way out of the property, you can purchase Jamaican souvenirs and merchandises from local vendors in the mini craft market.

If you are traveling with a lot of things you could rent a locker. When you return the key and the “DRY” receipt, you will get back a portion of what you paid.

Dunns River Falls should be one of the attractions to consider when coming to Jamaica if you like a challenge.
